Complete 2026 Guide to IELTS/PTE Score for Australia Visa
When you are preparing to study, work or migrate in Australia One of the primptoenter, you have to take tests like English tests. There are multiple English tests that you can take such as IELTS and PTE Academic, which is one of the most popular ones among international students — however, the result that you require varies depending on your visa application.
This guide explains which score you need with a detailed breakdown of the scores that you need, no. of bands at least, required for a specific visa, and how IELTS compares with PTE and vice-versa.
How the English Test Scores People Score Will Affect Your Australian Visa Results
Australia has set defined “levels” for English proficiency, not a pass or fail. Your test result is mapped to one of these bands and depending on the visa category, the band required may vary.
- Functional English – minimum level necessary for limited number of temporary visas
- Vocational English – a level above, for some working holiday and temporary work visas
- General English — this is bare minimum for most student and some skilled visas
- High level of Fluent English – this will capture additional points under a skilled migration
EAL (English as an Additional Language) – Additional points for not considering English your first language; I attained 20/20 in this category.
Knowing which tier your visa falls into — and if scoring higher earns you bonus points — will help you plan the rest of your test prep instead of taking shots in the dark.
Accepted English Tests
Australia accepts the test results of several test providers:
- IELTS Academic (and IELTS One Skill Retake that allows you to retake just one part of the test rather than sitting the full examination again)
- PTE Academic
- TOEFL iBT
- Cambridge C1 Advanced
- CELPIP General
- LanguageCert Academic
- Michigan English Test (MET)
- OET (for select health-related occupations)
Note: this only applies to the versions from the test-centre. Tests must be taken at an approved test centre and results from at-home, online versions are not accepted for Australian visa application purposes.
Student Visa (Subclass 500): IELTS/PTE Requirements
For a direct-entry Student Visa application, the general visa-level minimums are:
Test | Undergraduate | Postgraduate |
IELTS Academic (overall) | 6.0 (no band below 5.5) | 6.5–7.0 (no band below 6.0) |
PTE Academic (overall) | ~47–50 | 50–58 |
If your scores are below this, many institutions enable you to bundle your training with an ELICOS (English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students) pathway requiring a lower entry score — commonly IELTS 5.0–5.5 or PTE 36–39 — and then use those further weeks of English together to fill the gap.
Note:And note, these are visa floors — not university admission floors. Higher English requirementsMost Australian universities also have their own higher English (particularly Go8 Universities and the more competitive courses such as nursing, medicine and other health programs which are almost all IELTS 7.0+ or when using PTE generally 65+).
Skilled Migration Visas (Subclass 189, 190, 491, and the Points Test)
This is where English scores matter most, because they don’t just determine eligibility — they directly affect your points score in the Expression of Interest (EOI) system.
Level | IELTS (each band) | PTE Academic (each component) | Points Awarded |
Competent English | 6.0 | Listening 47 / Reading 48 / Writing 51 / Speaking 54 | 0 points |
Proficient English | 7.0 | Listening 65 / Reading 65 / Writing 65 / Speaking 65 | +10 points |
Superior English | 8.0 | Listening 84 / Reading 88 / Writing 90 / Speaking 90 | +20 points |
A few important notes:
- Essential English is usually the absolute requirement simply to apply for a skilled visa, but it also gets you no additional points.
- As invitation rounds for in-demand occupations often exceed 85+ total points, the majority of grant holders now possess Proficient or Superior English instead of just the basic threshold.
- Proficient and Superior IELTS thresholds remained stable, while PTE staged upward revisions of the thresholds for these two levels for tests attempted from August 2025 onwards — so if you are comparing older blog posts or forum advice check the scores against the current official chart because PTE benchmarks have shifted more than in IELTS.
- In general, test results are valid for 3 years as of the date on which you took the test.
Other Visa Categories
- Partner visas: English requirements more lenient, typically at the Functional English level and with some exemptions.
- Temporary Graduate visa, subclass 485: English requirement is between Competent and Proficient, one of the visas that can accept the IELTS One Skill Retake option — would only require you to lift one band score.
- Employer-sponsored visas (subclass 482): Each stream and nominated occupation has its own requirements so don’t just go by general rule of thumb, check the threshold specific to your role.
- This type of visa is generally only requires Functional English proficiency so passport holders from certain fellow English-speaking countries can even be exempt from testing at all.
Which One to Opt For – PTE or IELTS?
Both tests are equally weighted with the Department of Home Affairs so choosing the “right” choice depends on your strengths:
- PTE Academic is completely AI-scored and is all on computers with your results usually in 48 hours — perfect for someone who can type and speak into a microphone well, and wants speed.
- While IELTS, through the use of human examiners for speaking section and a combination of computer-and-paper formats that some candidates find more organic, does offer One Skill Retake (for select visas).
If you struggle with speaking, it is best to try both formats before you make a decision, as the experience of speaking into a microphone (PTE) compared to a real live human examiner (IELTS) can be felt very differently by students.
Quick Tips to Achieve Your Required Score
- Get familiar with the level you want to achieve from the beginning — Competent, Proficient or Superior as the test strategy for a 6.0 is completely different than that of an 8.0!
- The quote you saw online today about the PTE and IELTS scores is not necessarily still current — for example, in August 2025 PTE’s Proficient/Superior thresholds changed so then check against the latest firm figures by department of Home Affairs.
- You should be practising as close to the real test conditions as possible and particularly targeting the section where you most need improvement — generalised English language study will not directly improve a low component score.
- Verify your course/university requirement distinct from the visa requirement — these two are often disparate, and the uni’s is far higher.
- The storage section slots replenish fast, so book early — if you think you may want extra time to re-sit a section.
A Note on Accuracy
They vary widely by the immigration and test-score boundaries. The broader policy is until the middle of 2026, however always verify exact up to date numbers on the official Department of Home Affairs website (immi. homeaffairs. Seek advise from the Department of Home Affairs or a migration agent (MARN holder) for subclass and occupation specific information.
